Abstract: For biological and environmental monitoring, the sensitive and selective detection of copper (Cu²⁺) and mercury (Hg²⁺) ions is essential because of their widespread distribution and toxicity. In aquatic conditions, the bifunctional chemosensor RBPY offers quick, extremely selective, and reversible visual responses for Cu2+ and Hg2+. With excellent linearity, it shows a notable increase in absorbance for Cu2+ and Hg2+, enabling quantitative investigation at trace levels. The excellent selectivity of RBPY is unaffected by interference from common metal ions. In addition to solution sensing, RBPY has been effectively integrated into hydrogel matrices, offering a solid-state platform that is stable and enables colorimetric detection in real time. While RBPY-based portable test strips allow for on-site detection without the use of instruments, Arduino microcontroller integration produces automated sensors with digital readout, data logging, and remote monitoring capabilities. With these developments, RBPY is positioned as a promising multipurpose platform for sensitive and useful monitoring of dangerous Cu2+ and Hg2+ ions in biological and environmental applications.
