Abstract: We propose a method for generating square-wave pulse bunches using combined passively Q‑switched and gain-switched techniques. For a single pulse bunch, there are 4 square-wave pulses when the pump power of the LD is 3600 mW and the parameters of the modulation signal are the duty cycle of 50%, the voltage amplitude of 10 V, and the modulation frequency of 1.3 kHz, respectively. The number of square-wave pulses in a pulse bunch increases with increasing LD pump power and modulation duty cycle, but decreases as the modulation frequency increases, and is almost unaffected by the modulation voltage amplitude. Through optimizing the pump parameters, we obtained a pulse bunch with 28 square-wave pulses at the pump power of 4120 mW, the duty cycle of 50%, the voltage amplitude of 10 V, the modulation frequency of 0.9 kHz. In addition, the laser output power, repetition rate, pulse duration, pulse energy and peak power of the square-wave pulses also fluctuate with the change of the LD pump power and these parameters of the modulation.
