| Abstract: | This article focuses on the mineral goethite, an iron oxy-hydroxide (Fe3+O(OH)) commonly formed through oxidative weathering of iron-containing minerals, with an emphasis on specimens from southern Africa, particularly Namibia and South Africa. It details goethite’s physical properties, crystal habits, and its distinction from related minerals such as lepidocrocite and the non-mineral term limonite. The article highlights notable localities including the Vergenoeg fluorite mine and Monument Park in South Africa, the Tsumeb mine and Erongo Mountains in Namibia, and the Ngwenya iron ore mine and Devil’s Reef gold deposit in Eswatini, describing diverse goethite forms and associations with other minerals.
