Abstract (English): Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in Argentina and it has been detected in various environmental matrices, raising the need to study its behavior in soils from different regions of the country. Since adsorption is the most important process governing the fate of glyphosate, the aim of this work was to study this phenomenon in the A, Bt1, Bt2, BC and Ck horizons of an Aquic Argiustoll, and in the A, AC, C and Ck horizons of an Entic Haplustoll, both from the east of the province of Santiago del Estero. For such purpose, the batch equilibrium technique was used, and isotherms were fitted using the Freundlich model This model adequately described isotherms (R² = 0.97). Both soils had adsorption percentages greater than 62 %, showing remarkably high glyphosate retention coefficients in all horizons and a progressive decrease with depth. This decrease was mainly related to an increase in pH and sand content, and a decrease in cation exchange capacity, as well as clay and organic carbon contents. The observed reduction in glyphosate retention was more evident in the Entic Haplustoll soil. In contrast, the Aquic Argiustoll soil showed greater glyphosate absorption, which would result in a lower probability of leaching for the Aquic Argiustoll and a lower risk of groundwater contamination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
