| Abstract (English): | The expansion of the agricultural frontier under variable climatic conditions has intensified soil degradation. In this context, assessing the root biomass of tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum [Podp.] Barkworth y D. R. Dewey Phil) allows for a better understanding of the processes that sustain the resilience of semiarid pastoral systems. The objective of this study was to quantify tall wheatgrass root biomass and analyze root distribution in the soil profile, evaluating the influence of both the edaphoclimatic conditions in dry areas of Buenos Aires province (Villarino and Patagones districts) and contrasting management practices in different farms. The study was conducted plots of established tall wheatgrass in three farms in Villarino (GB, JDC, and RR) and three in Patagones (HA, WDL, and SC) during the spring of 2023. Edaphoclimatic and pasture management characteristics were analyzed. Root biomass below (BRM) and between (BREM) tall wheatgrass plants and total root biomass (BRT) were quantified to a depth of 80 cm, collecting stratified samples every 20 cm of soil. Tall wheatgrass BRT up to the calcareous layer (0 - 80 cm) showed no differences between districts or among farms, averaging 14.2 Mg ha-1 (± 0.7 Mg ha-1). In contrast, BREM showed a different root distribution pattern between districts, demonstrating the phenotypic plasticity of tall wheatgrass in response to water availability, and consequently, its adaptation to semiarid environments. The distribution of BRT was influenced by management practices, as significant differences among farms were only observed in the surface layer (0 - 20 cm). Poor management may compromise root functionality in the uppermost soil layer, which is crucial for capturing the scarce rainfall typical of the semiarid region. These findings highlight the need to establish unified management criteria of tall wheatgrass in the region under study to make more efficient use of rainwater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
