Abstract: This article examines international and domestic experience in applying diffusion barriers made of refractory heavy elements (e.g., Ir, Re, and W) on heat-resistant nickel alloys to reduce diffusion fluxes at the substrate-coating interface. A procedure for producing experimental samples of Re/NiAl and W/NiAl compositions using electrochemical and powder-based coating techniques, which was implemented at the Industrial University of Tyumen, is presented. Comparative tests of the obtained diffusion barriers were conducted under high-temperature and homogenizing vacuum annealing conditions (1050 ± 10 °C and 1170 ± 10 °C). Experimental results indicate that the Ni‑W diffusion barrier is inferior in stability to the Ni-Re barrier, as evidenced by significant contamination of the surface layer of the W/NiAl coating by substrate elements. The main parameters and characteristics of W and Re that most significantly influence their diffusivity are discussed. Conclusions are drawn regarding the feasibility of using coatings with a Ni-Re diffusion barrier on hot gas path components of land-based gas turbines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
