| Abstract: | Layered, boride‐based composites were formed by aqueous slip casting and pressureless sintering. Green densities of the cast ceramics were as high as 63%, and relative densities of ∼98% were reached for the densified ceramics. Layered composites consisting of a ZrB2‐SiC core with a HfB2‐TaC‐SiC shell or alternating layers of the two compositions were successfully co‐sintered to a relative density >98%. The interface between layers showed a coherent diffusion zone between the two compositions without cracking, but the interface contained multiple boride phases. The layered composites had finer grain sizes compared to the single composition ceramics that were densified at the same temperature. This sequential casting route enabled the production of near‐net shape ultra‐high temperature ceramics with layered compositions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
