Abstract: Two passive self‐recirculating flow control designs were manufactured and tested on a single stage transonic axial compressor with the goal of improving stall margin with a minimal penalty to efficiency where previous axial slot and circumferential groove casing treatments were unsuccessful. This study distinguishes itself from previous CFD simulations by presenting the actual effects of changing the manner of injection from circumferentially continuous to discrete, and the effects of adding co‐swirl and counter‐swirl to the main axial flow. Although multiple designs provided improved stability near stall and an extension to the stable operating range, a discrete injection model that added counter‐swirl flow provided an enhancement ranging from 2% to 8% depending on compressor speed, with minimal efficiency penalty and only a 3% increase in compressor casing radius.
