| Abstract: | This study investigates the quasi-static deformation behavior of hot-rolled, quenched, and tempered low-carbon steel containing 0.23 wt pct C and 1.2 wt pct Mn. The as-received microstructure consists of lath martensite with weak crystallographic texture, elongated martensitic blocks, and a high initial dislocation density. The steel yields at approximately 1.2 GPa and exhibits limited work hardening in both tension and compression. EBSD measurements show progressive geometrically necessary dislocation accumulation and boundary misorientation evolution with strain, whereas X-ray diffraction on interrupted specimens and in situ neutron diffraction indicate that the volume-averaged total dislocation density remains nearly constant, on the order of 1015 m–2. Strain-gradient crystal plasticity finite element simulations reproduce the measured stress–strain response and texture evolution while predicting boundary-localized GND accumulation. These results indicate that plastic deformation is accommodated primarily by compatibility-driven GND localization and dislocation redistribution/recovery within an initially dislocation-rich martensitic hierarchy, rather than by continued bulk dislocation multiplication.
