Abstract: In high‐strength Mg‐RE‐TM alloys, the intergranular block‐shaped long‐period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase is generally regarded as thermally stable. This study examined the annealing behavior of deformed Mg‐Y‐Zn alloys that contain exclusively block‐shaped LPSO phases. However, the results revealed that these LPSO phases exhibited recovery and softening after annealing. Specifically, the reduction in dislocation density within the annealed LPSO phases led to a decrease in average hardness. Additionally, the reduction in dislocation pile‐ups at the kinking bends alleviated released localized stresses, resulting in a decrease in the average kinking bending angle. This transformation of the block‐shaped LPSO phase may enhance the additional work hardening capacity of such alloy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
