| Abstract: | The article discusses the ousting of U.S. National Bureau of Standards (NBS) director Allen V. Astin by Secretary of Commerce Sinclair Weeks over an alleged controversy on the testing of batter additive, AD-X2. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has requested the NBS to perform tests on the value of battery additives in prolonging battery life. Weeks requested Assistant Secretary for Domestic Affairs Craig R. Shaeffer to conduct investigations before concluding that the NBS was mistaken whether through prejudice or error in their judgment of the worth of AD-X2. He accused the right of the NBS and the FTC to interfere with the free play of the market on grounds of inadequate proof of fraud and public harm. Statements by Weeks and Astin regarding the matter are presented. |
