Abstract: The article focuses on the author's research on juvenile delinquents in Hanoi, Vietnam, and discusses whether anthropologists should intervene if they find that their human subjects are at risk. After being arrested, street children were being placed in police-run "reform schools" where one of their activities was tattooing with a mix of blood, ink and dirt. Unlike other anthropologists, the author wanted to make them realize the threat of HIV infection associated with their behavior.
