Abstract: The article traces the development of the SIM8-01 microcomputer, the first commercially available 8-bit microcomputer, at Intel Corp. and analyzes its impact on the formation of the first wave of worldwide microcomputer activities. It describes that Ted Hoff's Applications Research Group developed the first 4- and 8- bit SIM microcomputers but they were made available and provided with software and dedicated technical and marketing support by the Micro Computer Systems Group. The role of small computer companies and of the emerging computer hobbyists's movement in exploring the potentials of Intel's microprocessor technology embedded in the SIMs for the purpose of the development of the 1st generation of general-purpose microcomputers has been discussed.
