| Abstract: | This paper presents an account of the evolution of satellite communications in India. Starting with the early experiments like Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) and Satellite Telecommunication Experiments Project (STEP), the paper goes on to describe the unique techniques developed both for space and ground segments keeping in mind the special needs of the country especially the applications in rural areas. The conventional SatCom applications cover telecommunication, broadcasting, disaster management and several other issues. Further unique and innovative applications such as training and developmental communication, launch of Edusat for exclusively educational purposes, telemedicine, as well as village resource centres are also described.
