Abstract: The synthetic route chosen to prepare the monomer 1-mono-p-phenylbenzoate of glycerol (1PHBGly) involved the synthesis of 1,2-O-isopropyliden-3-p-phenylbenzoate of glycerol followed by its hydrolysis with acid. This monomer has the phenylbenzoate mesogenic group attached. 1-mono-p-phenylbenzoate of glycerol was polyesterificated by melt bulk polycondensation with hexanediol (HD) and terephthaloyl chloride (TPHCl) in order to have a soluble polymer. Products were characterized by FTIR, [sup 1]H-NMR, DSC, powder X-ray diffraction, polarizing microscopy. In the case of the polymer, inherent viscosity was also determined. An amorphous copolymer, 1PHBGly/HD/TPHCl, was obtained. On the other hand, the 1,2-O-isopropyliden-3-p-phenylbenzoate of glycerol, the monomer (1PHBGly) and its copolymer did not form mesophases by heating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
