Abstract: The article reports on efforts to develop electromagnetic guns and launchers which got the attention of the academic, industrial and military sectors due to their potential important applications. The two types of accelerating devices that are being explored are rail guns and synchronous coaxial accelerators. Researchers believe that such guns could be built based on the Lorentz force, but challenges abound in practice.
