| Abstract: | The article focuses on the resignation of four-star general Sam Sims Walker who was trapped in a bureaucratic Pentagon crossfire between Army Chief of Staff General Bernard W. Rogers and Army Secretary Clifford Alexander Jr. It states that Walker chose to resign rather than retire and took a demotion and be assigned as a lieutenant general when Rogers, who assured him up for another four-star line up had struck out. It mentions that all temporary rank three- and four-star generals were subjected to lose as many as two stars if there was no suitable assignment found. Moreover, Walker appealed his case to Alexander, who makes the final decision on reassigning generals and to Commander in Chief Jimmy Carter through Secretary of Defense Harold Brown in which the President endorsed a demotion. |
