Abstract: As the nuclear power programme develops there is increasing public concern about the hazards from radionuclides; some of this concern arises from ignorance. The object of this paper is to dispel some of this ignorance as far as plutonium, one of the most toxic substances in the nuclear energy industry, is concerned. The radiological problems in the protection of workers handling this material are discussed and some data obtained at autopsy are given as well as health statistics of the workers at Windscale. This is preceded by a short account of the physical and biological properties of plutonium. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
