Abstract: Mortality of Cyclops viridis and Gammarus pulex was assessed after subjecting individuals to decreased pH and increased concentrations of aluminium ions (Al[sup 3+]) in an attempt to simulate some natural processes associated with acid rain. C viridis was intolerant of pH 4; after 168 hours at pH 4.5, C. viridis was susceptible to 0.1 mM aluminium ions but, with further increases of pH, was unaffected by amendment of water samples. G. pulex was also intolerant of pH 4, and mortality was greatly increased by aluminium ions, Initially, enhanced mortality was observed in G. pulex as compared to C. viridis after exposure to aluminium ions at a low pH. The direct toxic effects of simulated acid rain (i.e. increased H[sup +] and Al[sup 3+] concentration) implies that G. pulex may be eliminated rapidly from acidified waters, whereas C viridis may survive longer under such conditions. Indirectly, acidification leads to a decreased biotic diversity because sensitive species such as G. pulex are eliminated whereas more acidophilic species, such as C. viridis, become, at least initially, numerically better represented.
