Title: Move over Wi-Fi as info trips the light fantastic.
Authors: Condliffe, Jamie
Source: New Scientist. 7/23/2011, Vol. 211 Issue 2822, p18-18. 1/2p.
Subjects: Light emitting diodes, Data transmission systems, Haas, Harald, Wireless Internet, Wireless communications
Abstract: The article discusses visible light communication (VLC), a method of information transmission which uses high-brightness light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Groups of researchers are trying to increase the data rates of the system, which is also called Li-Fi, by using arrays of LEDs for parallel data transmission or using multiple colors of LEDs. Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh says that VLC is cheaper than wireless internet (Wi-Fi) and would not use radio-frequency signals.
