Subjects: Petrology, Magmas, Pumice, Calderas, Diffusion, Crystals
Geographic Terms: Santorini Volcano (Greece), Greece
Abstract: The article looks at a report from the issue by Druitt and team that applied igneous petrology methods to study the 'Minoan' caldera-forming volcanic eruption from approximately 1,600 BC on the Greek island of Santorini. The diffusion chronometric analysis of pumice rock crystals near the volcano indicated that the magma reservoir was recharged in accelerating pulses in the years and months before the eruption.
