| Abstract: |
The article discusses time synchronization in computer systems and presents Precision Time Protocol (PTP) as an alternative to Network Time Protocol (NTP) synchronization when cable costs are prohibitive or measurement and control system device precision is required. Topics include data packet management, local area networks, the Best Master Clock (BMC) algorithm, the use of boundary clocks in device hierarchy, security concerns, and peer delay mechanisms. Diagrams are included of a synchronization message exchange, a network stack supporting hardware timestamping, and device hierarchies. |
