Abstract: The article presents the unanticipated consequences of purposive social action in educational testing and schooling. It discusses an article by author Edward Haertel within the issue concerning the use of educational tests in terms of direct or indirect dependence on test scores that were illustrated on a reading test for English Language Learners (ELLs). An article by author R. Merton identified pitfalls that are common to investigations of purposive social action.
