Title: Common Industrial Communications Protocols.
Authors: Wilson, Clayton1
Source: Process Cooling & Equipment. Jul/Aug2013, p37-40. 4p.
Subjects: Computer network protocols, Object linking & embedding, Process control systems, Client/server computing, Commercial buildings
Abstract: The article offers the author's insights on protocols that communicates to shop floor's instrumentation. He says that the vendor's proprietary protocols gets data from the device by vendor's proprietary software. He states that the Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) for Process Control (OPC) is a common platform in which multiple instrument servers placed data and OPC collects it. He adds that the BACnet is used in control applications, allowing unlike systems used in a commercial building.
