Abstract: The article looks at the mechanical joining methods that are being considered for lightweighting automotive body structures. It describes the mechanical joining methods of self-pierce riveting, Henrob's low-energy, self-pierce riveting technology (HSPR), and ClinchRiveting. Other methods being considered are the patented aluminum welding technology that is being pursued by automaker General Motors and the Audi Crosslane carbon fiber composites concept.
