| Abstract: | The question of how community service learning contributes uniquely to the mission and goals of higher education, especially given its logistical demands and relatively high cost, needs to be answered. The increased attention of state systems and individual institutions to assessment practices also makes clearly assessing and articulating outcomes from community service learning particularly important. The primary objective of this article is to provide educators and policymakers with the language and a model to move away from narrow notions of cognition, traditional assessment methods, and traditional philosophies of outcomes assessment that limit our understanding of the potential of service learning as a viable pedagogy. |
