Abstract: In 1997, the Faculty Center for Professional Development at California State Polytechnic University initiated the SOAP I project to provide funding for student outcomes assessment projects. This chemistry department project focuses on program assessment and how it can inform curricular redesign to transform a general chemistry sequence from a teacher-centered to a more learner-centered experience. The project team spent the 1997-1998 academic year evaluating the background, mathematical skill level, reasoning style, attitude and self-confidence and success of chemistry students. The SOAP I project has made it possible for the chemistry department to construct a more accurate picture of the students enrolled in general chemistry.
