Abstract: The article offers the author's insights on a controversial thumbnail image in the 1959 film "Imitation of Life," directed by Douglas Sirk, which showed African American housemaid Annie Johnson gazes upon a photograph of two daughters playing on a Coney Island beach. The author states that the image showed anxieties over gender, motherhood, and race. The author adds that the film activates the still photograph by turning it into the temporality of cinematic and human movement.
