Abstract: The article explores the intricacies of the 1913-1915 back-to-Africa movement of Chief Alfred Charles Sam, a shadowy figure in Oklahoma history, which inspired the African American migration to Africa. The author argues that this movement was a prelude to Garveyism and the great migration as well as a capstone to what historian Carter G. Woodson called an African American migration within and beyond North America using the story of freedpeople Elic Davis and his cousin Monroe Coleman.
