| Abstract: | This article presents the author's reply to views of Sidney Strauss and Iris Levin on Robert S. Siegler's approach to child development. Strauss and Levin are correct in claiming that rules arise within a context and that rule usage is to some degree influenced by that context. This says nothing in particular about the utility of characterizing cognition in terms of rules, since all behavior arises within a context. Strauss and Levin's first major point is that the rules of the rule-assessment approach are the result of an interaction between task variables. The second of Strauss and Levin's major point, is that the rule-assessment approach itself is responsible for the present findings that children use simply describable rules. |
