| Abstract: | Fausto Maria Martini's Si sbarca a New York is a novel about the American journey of three young friends: Fausto, the author-protagonist; Alberto Tarchiani, who was later appointed Italian ambassador in Washington, DC; and Gino Calza Bini, who became a well-regarded poet of New York's Little Italy. Published in 1930, the novel is set in 1907, during the great Italian diaspora. Fausto, Alberto and Gino left Italy not for lack of resources, but to cope with the loss of their friend, the poet Sergio Corazzini, a traumatic event that marked the end of their adolescence. Si sbarca a New York has been read primarily as a memoir and tribute to Corazzini. The present introduction by Danila Cannamela, followed by the first English translation of a chapter from the novel, also by Cannamela, interprets Si sbarca a New York as an overlooked testimony of Italian Americana, while locating the novel within the context of its narration and publication.
