| Abstract (English): | Teaching functions in higher education institutions have been diversified to improve education completion and prevent academic underachievement. While tutoring has so far been the main strategy, there are other teaching functions such as supervision, counselling, educational guidance, educational coaching and particularly mentoring, which at present have been little used in higher education contexts. The purpose of this article is to theoretically conceptualize these teaching functions to differentiate them and show how they can complement each other. This paper argues about the value of mentoring in the training of students, and concludes that it is necessary to incorporate it into higher education institutions because of its potential to promote academic achievement. | Abstract (Spanish): | Las funciones docentes en las instituciones de educación superior se han diversificado para mejorar la terminalidad y prevenir el rezago académico. Si bien la tutoría ha sido hasta el momento la estrategia por excelencia, existen otras funciones docentes como la supervisión, la asesoría, la orientación educativa, el coaching educativo y, en especial, la mentoría, que ha sido poco empleada en el contexto educativo local. El propósito de este artículo es conceptualizar de manera teórica estas funciones docentes para diferenciarlas y mostrar cómo pueden complementarse. Se argumenta sobre el valor de la mentoría en la formación de los estudiantes y se concluye que es necesario incorporarla en las instituciones de educación superior, debido a su potencial para promover el logro académico.
