Abstract: In this paper, we report on a study in which we investigated the outcomes of an immersive, 90-day, island-based semester-program that utilizes a place-based curriculum. Using interviews we investigated students' ’endencies to engage in sense-making (drawing on realistic considerations) in the context of story problems. Our findings suggest that such programs may not be enough to support students in unlearning the norms regarding the suspension of sensemaking associated with doing story problems in school.
