Abstract: After several weeks of observing and measuring the growth of their plants, students agreed that the plants growing in the cotton balls were just as healthy as the plants growing in the soil (see Figure 2). In this article, we provide a unique approach to a classic activity in which fifth-grade students investigate plant growth by engaging in the science practice of modeling.
