Abstract (English): This work presents the partial results (phase 1: diagnostic) of a research and intervention project aimed at implementing strategies for the development of socio-emotional skills in undergraduate students to motivate them to learn English in a public state university in Mexico. The purpose of the diagnostic phase documented here was to describe the profile of the 36 students who participated in the project about the perceptions and meaning that they attributed to socioemotional skills. This is an exploratory mixed method design study. The main results indicate that students positively identify and value the six socio-emotional skills explored. However, selfknowledge, self-regulation and collaboration showed a low level of development. Conclusions highlight the importance of defining strategies for the development of this type of skills in addition to supporting them with sound technical and methodological diagnostics. Abstract (Spanish): Este trabajo presenta los resultados parciales (fase 1: diagnóstico) de un proyecto de investigación e intervención, el cual busca implementar estrategias para el desarrollo de habilidades socioemocionales en estudiantes de licenciatura para motivarlos a aprender inglés en una universidad pública estatal de México. La fase de diagnóstico que se documenta tuvo como propósito describir el perfil de los 36 estudiantes participantes en el proyecto sobre las percepciones y significado que estos le atribuyen a las habilidades socioemocionales. El estudio es de tipo mixto y alcance exploratorio. Los resultados principales indican que los estudiantes identifican y valoran de forma positiva las seis habilidades socioemocionales exploradas, sin embargo, el autoconocimiento, la autorregulación y la colaboración mostraron un nivel bajo de desarrollo. Las conclusiones subrayan la importancia de definir estrategias para el desarrollo de este tipo de habilidades, además de sustentar dichas estrategias en diagnósticos sólidos técnica y metodológicamente.
