| Abstract: | The article focuses on the management of the newborn with myelodysplasia. The primary failure of neural lube closure that leads to myelodysplasia in a neonate occurs in the first month of gestation. The cause of myelodysplasia is unknown and evidence exists for both environmental and genetic intelligence. Clusters of cases occur and there is a higher incidence among the poor and persons living in wet temperate climates. The presence of active hydrocephalus is the single most critical factor in survival. The earlier death associated with high lesions is due to hydrocephalus and other untreated anomalies that occur more commonly with these lesions. The main causes of death in affected neonates are increased intracranial pressure and infection of the central nervous system. The quality of survival depends on the level of lesion, degree of malformation of the brain, infections and other complications. Intellectual potential can be reasonably predicted from brain mass using pneumo-encephalography. |
