Abstract (English): The training of the professor has become an emerging and evolving issue within engineering education. This is why it is imperative to establish the foundations that allow designing meaningful training proposals that promote teaching and learning processes in accordance with social transformations. This paper presents the result of an analysis of theoretical backgrounds and research referring to a foundation for the training of engineering professors from the fields of educational sciences, science didactics, and engineering education. Through the integration of these fields, the aim is to establish constituent elements that allow recognizing the engineering professor as an intellectual in education, with professional training and epistemological dimension. Finally, a model for training is proposed, integrating elements from critical research and reflection on pedagogical practice based on the profile and professional development demanded by the field of engineering education for its professors. This background analysis is part of a doctoral research project that is in development and whose purpose is to establish guidelines for the design and implementation of training plans for practicing engineering teachers, based on the recognition of their professional knowledge and the epistemology of the teachers this discipline. Abstract (Spanish): La formación del profesor se ha convertido en una problemática emergente y en desarrollo dentro de la educación en ingeniería. Razón por la cual se hace imperioso establecer los fundamentos que permitan diseñar propuestas de formación significativos que favorezcan una enseñanza y aprendizaje conforme a las transformaciones sociales. Este escrito presenta el resultado de un análisis de antecedentes teóricos y e investigaciones que relacionan una fundamentación para la formación de profesores de ingeniería desde los campos de las ciencias de la educación, la educación en ingeniería y la didáctica de las ciencias. Mediante la articulación de dichos campos se busca establecer elementos constitutivos que permitan reconocer al profesor de ingeniería como un experto en educación, con formación profesional y dimensión epistemológica. Por último, se propone un modelo para la formación articulando elementos desde la investigación crítica y la práctica pedagógica reflexiva sobre la base del perfil y desarrollo profesional que demanda el campo de la educación en ingeniería. Este análisis de antecedentes hace parte de un proyecto de investigación doctoral que se encuentra en desarrollo y cuyo propósito es constituir los lineamientos para el diseño e implementación de planes de formación para profesores de ingeniería en ejercicio, fundamentados desde el reconocimiento de sus conocimientos profesionales y de una epistemología propia del docente de esta disciplina.
