| Abstract: | This article explores the significance of Tent/Freedom Cities as a form of Black place-making and anti-racist activism during the Civil Rights Movement. It specifically focuses on two Tent/Freedom Cities in Fayette County, Tennessee, and Lowndes County, Alabama, which were established to provide housing for Black sharecroppers and tenant farmers who were evicted due to their involvement in civil rights activities. The article argues that teaching about these encampments is important in order to shed light on a lesser-known aspect of the Civil Rights Movement and to examine the relationship between civil rights struggles and the creation of home. It provides background information, primary sources, and teaching resources to facilitate the exploration of these alternative Black geographies. By incorporating the stories and experiences of Tent City residents, educators can offer a more comprehensive understanding of the Civil Rights Movement and its impact on Black communities.
