| Abstract: | The Association of Southeastern Research Libraries – more commonly known by the acronym "ASERL" – has a long and colorful history dating back to 1956. Originally a social networking group for research library leaders in the southeastern United States, ASERL's journey reflects the changing landscape of academic libraries – beginning as an unstaffed, on-again/off-again volunteer organization for much of its existence and blossoming into a robust, professionally staffed organization in the past 20+ years. If it were not for the foresight of a small group of library deans in the late 1990s, ASERL would likely have disbanded long ago. Instead, these visionary leaders saw the value of growing ASERL. With staffing in place starting in May 2000, ASERL has transformed into a growing and influential consortium. This article details ASERL's history, its contributions to the profession, and its plans for the future, showcasing its significant contributions to research libraries in the region and beyond.
