Abstract: This article presents an ethnographic account of the author's experience as chair of the English Department at Mohammed V University in Rabat from over the period lasting from January 2016 to January 2018. It provides prospective chairs and university leadership with the insights gained during the period with a view to enhancing chairs' preparedness for this leadership role. This study employs autoethnography as a research method to deepen our understanding of the evolving role of the department chair. It offers a detailed and contextualised analysis based on the experience of an academic with over 18 years in academia, who served as a department chair and interacted with various chairs in roles, such as an academic, Director of the Vice-Chancellor's office, and Vice Dean of academic affairs. The article concludes with suggestions on what universities can do to make the chair role attractive and hence improve departmental and institutional effectiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
