| Abstract: | The article describes in detail how a citizens' advisory council in Tenafly, New Jersey is organized, how it works and some of its accomplishments. These councils have helped bring about some major accomplishments in local school communities in the United States. These can be sources of security and satisfaction to the school administrative and teaching staff by providing a group of key people in the community who understand the school's problems and are sympathetic to its aims. The first step in setting up a citizens advisory council is to ask the students and the teachers of a school to give the principal the names of people in their neighborhoods who are unusually interested in the work of the school. This list is examined to find representatives from all sections of the local community. In the final selection of the membership, the prospects' participation in local organizations is taken into account as well as their geographic location. However, no organization is given official representation. The council members serve for between one and three years. |
