Abstract: The article discusses the significance of the Transporten en Schepenkennissen series of grants and transfer documents stretching from 1652 to the present day. Records in the series are important primary sources for historical research on early Cape slavery and slave trade, and its deeds and transfer documents continue to be in practical use for consultations around land ownership and restitution. The hundreds of volumes in the series have had a complicated archival history, and while most of the collection is with the Cape Town Deeds Office, parts of the early records are kept in the Western Cape Archives and Records Service (WCARS). The challenges of storage and conservation are considerable, and efforts of digitisation have so far been incomplete. The article traces how the Transporten en Schepenkennissen documents were an important reference in the writings of Cape historians from the 1970s onwards, but also how its potentials have not been fully utilised. The article maps out the present whereabouts of the early volumes for the period 1652 to 1736 and their distribution between the Cape Town Deeds Office and the Western Cape Archives and reflects on possible scenarios for future custody and access.
