Abstract: This study analyzed the use of personality traits in 635 job advertisements for public services and technical services positions in academic libraries. Big Five personality traits and personality descriptors were identified to determine similarities and differences between the two job types. The most desired Big Five personality trait for both job types was Agreeableness, as well as the descriptor "collaborative." The least desired trait, Emotional Stability, was also similar for both job types. Academic libraries use less descriptors to describe the library or the department than they do to describe the desired applicant. Library search committees should consider reviewing each job advertisement for the use of personality descriptors for both the employer and the applicant and include more information on how each trait would be helpful for that specific position or remove the trait entirely to not deter potential applicants.
