| Abstract: | I was a library manager for much of my career. While I had difficult days, I never consistently woke up not wanting to go to work. The reasons were the differences from corporate and business management described below that made library management more rewarding and less stressful. Businesses must earn profits to survive while most libraries have an assured base funding. The library manager should strive for excellence but is less obligated to achieve 100% results. I also faced fewer ethical dilemmas because my main goal was providing the best service possible for free or at low cost rather than extracting maximum revenue from my customers. In addition, I worked with better educated staff who shared my interests and were usually easier to supervise. The disadvantages were lower salaries and less prestige, but I prefer a frugal lifestyle and didn't want to break into high society.
