Abstract: This article investigated whether physical abuse and partner hypermasculinity influenced sexual behavior change among 46 Latinas who participated in an HIV prevention study. Although the intervention was not successful in promoting behavior change, the current study yielded novel information about the salience of abuse in the relationships of many Latinas, about relations between abuse and traditional gender role expectations, and about Latinas' ability to implement sexual behavior change in the context of relationships. Many of the Latinas who participated in this study experienced high levels of psychological and physical abuse from their male partners. Over four fifths of participants reported at least one act of psychological abuse, and over half at least one act of physical abuse, during the 6-month study period. Moreover, nearly three quarters of the women said their partners had used physical violence against them in the past. Because little research has been conducted with similar populations of inner city Latinas, it is not clear whether the levels of violence reported in the current study are unusually high or whether similar findings would be reported in other samples.
