Abstract: Children in Irish-medium (or Irish immersion) primary schools have a variety of strengths, abilities, interests and needs and the Primary Language Curriculum aims to support all language learners in Irish primary schools. The potential of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to promote successful second or additional language learning, and to support teachers in planning and preparing for the inclusive teaching of Irish in immersion settings, has not received much discussion to date. The current paper aims to address this gap. Each of the three principles of the UDL framework are explored in this paper, and their relevance in the context of second or additional language learning in immersion settings is examined.
