Abstract: The introductory essay illustrates the reasons of a dossier dedicated to the origins and development of a series of didactic practices related to the origins of educational institutions and systems which have made the history of elementary school (and more) in Europe since the 18th century. The «normal method» and the related schools are extremely important not only for a history of teaching practices, handbooks and texts useful for the training of students and teachers, but also for a history of school and educational institutions which can be reconstructed through case studies capable of highlighting the relations of specific events and contextual issues with broader areas and educational systems at an international level.
