Abstract: This paper focuses on vignettes as a creative research method that can help us conceptualise early childhood education and care teachers' understandings of diversity. Research on teachers' understandings of diversity and inclusive education is used as an example to illustrate how vignettes can shed light on specific elements (e.g. school structures and materials, diversity awareness raising approaches, etc.), and the complexities of national contexts and school realities. The paper reports on a study concerned with the engagement of novice researchers (i.e. postgraduate students with an undergraduate degree in pre-primary or primary education) with the development of interview protocols using vignettes. The analysis of the dataset (i.e. interview protocols, autobiographical notes, and reflective notes) identifies the elements that can make vignettes a creative research method. The discussion sheds light on how we can move from conventional to creative research methods, by reconsidering the roles of the researchers and the participants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
