Abstract: In the light of children's declining attitudes to reading, renewed attention is being paid to reading for pleasure across the globe, and policy makers and practitioners are pursuing effective ways for schools to nurture and sustain children's volitional reading. In this paper, I summarise the benefits of being a childhood reader, and explore ways to develop connected reading communities, examining the knowledge needed, and the individual and social orientations of reading for pleasure pedagogy.
