Abstract (English): A sound knowledge of written language is essential for understanding complex issues in everyday life and for self-determined participation in society. However, despite compulsory schooling, this cannot be taken for granted across the board. To date, education providers have not been sufficiently successful in motivating low-literacy learners or adults with basic education needs to participate in course-related learning opportunities. As selected examples of best practice show, a precise focus on the special needs of low-literacy adults is of great importance for successfully addressing the target group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
